well this is a bit of a semantic problem. In my view I consider all intersections to be canonical. For them to be canonical there should be two directions in which we can break the degeneracy. In the case of two states of different symmetry the second direction is the one which breaks the symmetry between the two states. In case of states with different spin, the introduction of spin-orbit coupling will break the degeneracy, thus providing a "second direction" again to break the degeneracy between the two states. OK?
